HIRU : NETINFO, Epic Games & Africa GameDev
HIRU is a 3D Video Game for consoles & PC. HIRU is a Maasai prince, the teenage son of a Maasai king. He is out herding cattle with his brother & goes back home to find his clan getting massacred by poachers for protecting a herd of elephants. He embarks on a journey of vengeance and redemption for his family while also seeking to "retire" the poachers and safeguard maasai ancestral lands from environmental destruction.
We started working on HIRU 7 years ago in 2014. The idea of the game was sketched out back then and then shelved. It spent 7 years waiting for the tools, ability, energy and talent to assemble and bring it to life.
The story is about and was inspired by the Maasai. The Maasai are a warrior tribe from East Africa, well known for being Lion Killers and their red costume, jumping and pastoralist culture.

We joined the Africa Game Dev program in November 2020. The first Cohort ended on May 28th / 29th 2021. 7 months of design, development, redesign and numerous pitching. The African game dev program is a training and support program for video game development initiated by NETINFO and supported by Epic Games. Out of 40 game development teams across Africa, Kunta Content was the leading team and HIRU was the top game.
The Africa Game Dev program came to a close in late May. This program targeted more than 200 young students and professionals from 10 African countries. The program integrated a series of workshops, trainings and feedback sessions to introduce developers and game development teams to video game production technologies using Epic Games' Unreal Engine. The program is practical based where the developers focused on building their own game with insights and feedback from experienced developers and animators from around the world.
